Program Description:

The Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Program provides state-of-the-art care for children and adolescents with oncologic and hematologic disorders. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team of subspecialists. As full members of the Children's Cancer Group, the world's largest research organization for the understanding and treatment of childhood cancer, the most advanced care can be provided to such children. In addition to therapeutic trials and phase I investigational drug studies, epidemiologic, nursing and supportive care studies are areas of ongoing research. Biologic studies of childhood cancers are conducted through the Cooperative Human Tissue Network. This research may provide a better understanding of childhood malignancies, thus leading to better treatment and/or prevention of these cancers.

The Long-Term Survivors Clinic provides ongoing comprehensive care to children and adolescents who have been successfully treated for malignancies and are off all therapy. This care includes clinical evaluation and studies of endocrine, kidney and liver function to assess and compile data on the late effects of the disease and its treatment.

Children and adolescents with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders are managed in the State-funded Comprehensive Hemophilia Care Program. Likewise, children and adolescents with sickle cell anemia, thalassemia and other hemoglobinopathies are treated in the State-funded Comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Program.

Members of the Division understand that the emotional and psychological well-being of the child and family is as important as the quality of medical care that is provided. Therefore, a school teacher and child life specialist and counselors are available to tutor patients during their inpatient stays and outpatient visits. A school reintegration program provides a vital mechanism for school-aged children to return to school after their diagnosis and sometimes lengthy hospitalization. Support groups are provided to help the children and their families cope with the effects of these life-threatening illnesses.
