Program Description:

The Nephrology staff cares for patients with acute renal failure or end-stage renal disease at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Dialysis Unit. The hemodialysis facilities include a nine-station hospital-based unit that can accommodate approximately 60 adult and pediatric patients, and a 36-station outpatient unit that can accommodate 216 patients. Biocompatible membranes and a high quantity of dialytic clearance (Kt/V) are emphasized. The peritoneal dialysis facility has six full-time home training nurses and cares for about 130 home patients who are treated with Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Continuous Cyclic Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD). The CCPD program is the largest in New Jersey and one of the largest in the U.S.

Dialysis patients receive comprehensive end-stage renal disease care at the center. Vascular surgery (for hemodialysis access), general surgery for Tenckhoff catheter placement and all other specialties and subspecialties are readily available. Social service and dietary support services are routinely provided.
