Program Description:
The Transfusion Medicine Program, co-sponsored with the Department of Pathology, provides full-service state-of-the-art transfusion services, which include therapeutic apheresis. A component care coordinator interfaces with patients, families, physicians and the community, and assists with donor procurement, especially for platelet transfusions.
There is a special cadre of low-risk "Children's Institute Donors" for patients who require many transfusions.
The Program has considerable therapeutic apheresis experience, especially for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, Guillain-Barré and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.
