The Division of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hypertension of the Department of Medicine of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is comprised of specialists and subspecialists who perform all aspects of diagnostic and therapeutic inpatient and outpatient care of patients with cardiovascular diseases and hypertension.

In addition to the above, the Digestive Disease Center has 5 full-time, board certified, gastroenterologists with significant expertise in various GI and liver disorders, and each physician is committed to providing excellent clinical care to our patients.

Esophagus, Stomach and Colon Cancer Prevention Program

Gastrointestinal cancers are the second most common cancers in the country. We offer comprehensive cancer prevention program by an interdisciplinary approach, along with our outstanding colleagues from the Cancer Institute of NJ. We have developed a novel marker (available only at our medical school) to detect those with severe gastroesophageal reflux (or heartburn) early on, as there can be an increased incidence in the development of a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett's Esophagus. Indeed, adenocarcinoma of the esophagus (foodpipe) has the fastest rising incidence of all carcinomas in the U.S.A. and in Europe. Our colon cancer prevention program is aimed at education, identification of risk group, early detection of polyps and appropriate non- surgical treatment. We also offer state-of-the-art non-surgical diagnostic procedure, known as endoscopic ultrasound, to accurately assess the type and extent of the tumor, obtain a biopsy specimen for proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

The Pancreas and Biliary Tract Program

With the aid of the latest in endoscopic technology, the Biliary-Pacreas Disease Center provides a more minimally-invasive means of diagnosing and treating the complications of gallstone disease as well as malignancies of the pancreas and biliary system.

In conjunction with our surgical and radiology colleagues at the center, we offer a multi-disciplinary approach to these conditions, ensuring focused, state-of-the-art management in each individual case.

Swallowing Disorders, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD) and Peptic Ulcer Disease Program

Besides strong clinical interest and expertise of several faculty members in these disorders, the division is doing clinical research aimed at appropriate management of these common upper gastrointestinal problems. Additional study includes accurate diagnosis of Helicobacter Pylori, the bacteria shown to be associated with peptic ulcer disease, and institute effective management. Active bleeding from ulcers is controlled using the latest state-of-the-art equipment, including laser therapy.

The Liver Disease Program

We treat all forms of acute and chronic liver disease. We have a great deal of experience in the management of Hepatitis B & C, as well as other forms of chronic liver diseases such as Cirrhosis, toxic chemical injury to liver and liver cancer. Several treatment protocols are available for treating chronic viral hepatitis.
