Program Description:
The Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition Program is staffed by a nationally known group of physician specialists and researchers, as well as nurse specialists, dietitians and laboratory personnel, who provide comprehensive care in the following major areas:
Diabetes Mellitus
- A team approach to diabetes management is stressed. In addition to physicians, the team includes dietitians and certified diabetes nurse-educators. A computerized analysis of home blood glucose monitoring, intensified insulin therapy and exercise prescriptions are available.
Disorders of Thyroid, Adrenal, Pituitary and Calcium Metabolism
- Clinical and laboratory evaluation and treatment, including fine needle aspiration of the thyroid and dynamic endocrine testing, are provided.
Hypercholesterolemia and Atherosclerosis
- The Program offers a comprehensive evaluation of hereditary and acquired lipoprotein abnormalities and their interaction with other risk factors for atherosclerosis. Specialized lipid studies can be carried out in the research laboratories.
Obesity
- An endocrine and nutritional evaluation of obesity is performed. Diet and exercise prescriptions, and referrals for behavior modification or surgical interventions, are provided.
Nutrition Evaluation
- A nutrition evaluation is performed by clinical and laboratory assessment, and diet prescriptions are written by physicians and dietitians.
Disorders of Male and Female Sexual Function
- This Program includes the multidisciplinary evaluation and management of impotence by a team, including psychiatrists and urologists.
Osteoporosis
The faculty interacts and collaborates closely with other divisions of the Department of Internal Medicine, as well as the Departments of Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Radiology, in the care of patients. The Clinical Research Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is available for specialized metabolic and endocrine studies.
Many research protocols provide extensive medical evaluation and treatment free of charge. These research laboratories can provide specialized testing not available in routine hospital or commercial laboratories.
