Department of Medicine

Division of Cardiovascular Diseases
and Hypertension

The Division of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hypertension of the Department of Medicine of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is comprised of specialists and subspecialists who perform all aspects of diagnostic and therapeutic inpatient and outpatient care of patients with cardiovascular diseases and hypertension.

The Cardiac Arrhythmia Center is a state-of-the-art resource at the Heart Center of New Jersey. Twelve-lead electrocardiography is used to diagnose a variety of conditions including rhythm disorders and heart attacks. Signal averaged electrocardiography is helpful in differentiating patients at high risk from those at low risk for dangerous heart rhythm disturbances. Ambulatory electrocardiography (Holter monitoring) records all heartbeats over a 24-hour period while patients perform their normal daily activities. This allows evaluation of rhythm disturbances in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Head upright tilt testing is used to evaluate the cause of light-headedness or loss of consciousness in patients with a history of fainting and can be performed with or without the use of specific adjunctive medications.

In the hospital's Electrophysiology Studies (EPS) Laboratory, catheters positioned within the heart measure electrical activity and vulnerability of the heart to abnormal rhythms and excessively rapid or slow heart rates. The most advanced models of temporary or permanent pacemakers are available to treat dangerously slow rhythms. For treatment of abnormal rhythms with excessively rapid heart rates, medications, transcatheter ablation (using heat energy to interrupt an electrical connection), or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (electrical shock) devices are available to be employed by our skilled arrhythmia experts.

The Center spans inpatient and outpatient activities, is a resource to physicians practicing at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital system and to patients living in central New Jersey.
