The Cancer Institute of New Jersey
The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) is the state’s first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and one of only 39 centers nationwide. CINJ is dedicated to improving the prevention, detection, treatment, and care of patients with cancer, through the transformation of laboratory discoveries into clinical practice. The war against cancer is particularly important for New Jersey, a state that ranks in the top ten nationally for cancer incidence. While our survival rate is increasing due to improvements in prevention and early detection, much remains to be done. At CINJ, we are committed to learning more about cancer and making our discoveries available to the public to aid in disease prevention. CINJ is a Center of Excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Research
At CINJ, laboratory research is supported by more than $93 million annually in cancer-related research grants. Research is being conducted in areas including: oncogenes, epidemiology, chemical carcinogenesis, tumor virology and immunology, drug development and resistance, the relationship between cellular and genetic mechanisms and tumor development, and cancer genomics. CINJ researchers hold faculty positions at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, UMDNJ-School of Public Health, and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
Basic scientists and clinical researchers meet regularly to exchange information and ensure that laboratory discoveries are refined and applied to clinical care as quickly as possible, and that clinical observations reach laboratory researchers on a continuing basis. Understanding the molecular and biological nature of cancer influences how oncologists at CINJ think about prognosis and treatment. In addition to enabling more accurate prognosis, information about molecular and biological characteristics of a tumor can be used to design more rigorous treatment strategies for patients who cannot be cured by current standard methods.
Treatment
Patients of CINJ can be treated in our New Brunswick facility or at a hospital close to home in one of our network hospitals located throughout New Jersey. At CINJ, in New Brunswick, a dedicated team of nationally renowned specialists including medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, social workers and nurses identify and meet the needs of each patient. Whether in our New Brunswick facility or at one of our Network hospitals, patients receive compassionate attention to their needs and are assured of the most promising therapeutic approach and the most supportive system of delivery. CINJ patients also have unprecedented access to clinical trials. To learn more about CINJ's clinical trials go to www.cinj.org/clinicaltrials.
The Cancer Institute of New Jersey incorporates the varied disciplines that define advanced state-of-the-art approaches in comprehensive cancer care. These approaches include sophisticated techniques in diagnosis, surgical options, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapy, and radiation therapy. These services are provided in one comfortable, private setting that enables a patient to see specialists from several disciplines during one appointment and encourages dialogue about diagnosis and treatment options.
