Dr. Hari Tunuguntla is chief of female urology, neurourology and urodynamics. He was fellowship trained at the Miller School of Medicine located in Miami, Florida.

A joint program of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, our comprehensive kidney stone center offers a multi-disciplinary approach for the management of kidney stones, including surgical, medical and dietary evaluation and counseling.

A Range of Treatment

The center’s integrated team approach is led by board-certified urologists and a nephrologist, providing the latest surgical and non-surgical treatments for kidney stones. Because diet is an important factor in the development of kidney stones, our specialists work to determine the cause of the stones and, if needed, dietitians will work with patients to develop dietary changes designed to prevent future stones from forming.

The Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital offers a wide array of treatments and procedures using latest technologies and instrumentation in the field of urologic surgery.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is performed by passing a telescope through the abdominal wall, usually at the umbilicus, to directly visualize the inside of the abdomen and pelvis. Though primarily diagnostic in adults and children, interventional laparoscopy is evolving. For example, lymphadenectomy (removal of lymph nodes) for the staging of urologic malignancy may be performed through this technique, avoiding an incision and prolonged hospitalization. Laparoscopy is also helpful in the diagnosis and treatment of some children with undescended testicle(s). Pediatric urology involves the diagnosis and treatment of urologic problems in children from birth to early adulthood. Some conditions, such as fluid-filled enlargement of the kidneys, are even evaluated antenatally (before birth). The pediatric urology program at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is under the direction of Joseph G. Barone, MD. It is truly a world-class program, offering treatment of hernia and hydrocele, vesicoureteral reflux, ureteropelvic junction obstruction, hypospadias, voiding dysfunction and infection. For children who wet, the pediatric urology program offers a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment program, one of a few such programs in the country. Though day procedures may be performed at one of several surgicenters, the Pediatric Urology Program is based at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (BMSCH). BMSCH features a variety of pediatric subspecialists for situations that require a multidisciplinary approach, including pediatric radiology and pediatric anesthesia. Pediatric child-life nurses provide an excellent teaching program for children who require surgery. At BMSCH, you are encouraged to accompany your child into the operating room, comfort your child in the postoperative recovery room and sleep in your child's room should an overnight stay be necessary. Dr. Barone also provides a second-opinion program for consultation before your child has surgery.
