Department of Pediatrics
Division of General Pediatrics
The Division of General Pediatrics at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School seeks to ensure the health and well-being of all children.
The division comprises physicians with training and expertise in hospitalist and ambulatory care. We provide multidisciplinary and family-centered care in our inpatient and ambulatory clinical sites.
General pediatric hospitalists provide care in the inpatient and well-baby units at The Bristol-Myers Squib Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, an RWJBarnabas Health facility.
Hospitalists are medical professionals whose primary focus is caring for patients staying in the hospital. Hospitalists provide medical care for conditions ranging from straightforward general pediatric problems and newborn care to more complex, multi-specialty issues with complex conditions. Hospitalist care is family centered and is coordinated with the primary care pediatrician, pediatric medical subspecialist and pediatric surgical specialist to provide high-quality care. Hospitalists also coordinate the transition back to the pediatric medical home.
At the Eric B. Chandler Health Center in New Brunswick and the Rutgers Health pediatrics practice at Worlds Fair Drive in Somerset, the division of general pediatrics provides comprehensive, family-centered care to children from birth to 21 years of age. Services include well care and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses. Our pediatricians provide high-quality and high-value care, including preventive care, behavioral and developmental health screening, vaccinations, vision and hearing screenings, and physical exams. Care is personalized to each child’s physical, developmental, social and emotional needs
Community Outreach, Research and Education
Members of the division also serve the community through membership in local community groups, as well as through the division’s Resident Education in Advocacy and Community Health (REACH) program. This program provides the opportunity for residents to learn to become pediatricians who:
- Are as comfortable and competent in their role as child advocates as they are in their medical practice
- Effectively advocate for an individual child and family, as well as all children in their community on a city, state, regional and national level
- Work in partnership with community-based agencies to promote the well-being of children
Throughout this educational process, we integrate and expand on community-based pediatrics and advocacy throughout the New Brunswick and New Jersey community.
All physicians in the division are involved in the education of medical students, interns and residents, including summer lecture series, participating as preceptors at the Resident Continuity Clinic, serving as facilitators for group case discussions, mentoring third- and fourth-year students during their clerkships, and facilitating OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) exams for students at all levels of training.
Additionally, our faculty believes that participation in all aspects of research is mandatory in order for comprehensive care of children to be achieved. Our division’s commitment to clinical research and case studies has resulted in a variety of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Current research includes studies focusing on early literacy and the pediatrician; and postpartum depression, featuring parenting support groups for Spanish-speaking mothers. The division also plays a role as faculty advisors for pediatric resident research projects.
