Division of Infectious Diseases and Allergy, Immunology
Our specialists in infectious diseases provide a full range of consultative services for adults with infections. These conditions include, but are not limited to, post-surgical infections, infections in transplant and other immunocompromised patients, and infections of the skin, bones, joints, lungs and intestines. In addition, we manage and treat patients with HIV infection and/or chronic Hepatitis B and C.
Our International Travel and Immunization Program provides individualized pre-travel counseling for adults and children, along with all required and recommended immunizations.
The division’s allergy and immunology specialist evaluates and treats adults and children with allergic and immunologic disorders. Services include testing for allergies to medications and environmental triggers, desensitization (“allergy shots”) and management of immune deficiencies.
The Allergy/Clinical Immunology Program treats patients with asthma and allergic conditions, such as rhinitis, conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis, urticaria/angioedema, anaphylaxis and sinusitis. Patients with frequent infections and known immune disorders are also seen.
Allergy testing is offered for sensitivity to pollen, indoor allergens, animal danders, foods, stinging insects, antibiotics, local anesthetics and other drugs. When appropriate, the administration of immunotherapy may be provided on-site. Alternately, vials can be prepared and sent to private physicians to administer the shots in their offices.
The HIV Counseling and Testing Program serves the needs of those persons who may be at risk for the acquisition of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Any person can request an appointment by phone or in person. They can also be referred by their physicians. Appointments are prompt, including evening as well as daytime hours.
Clients are interviewed by a nurse counselor and/or social worker. Oral antibody testing is done with results available in 30 minutes, after which the client is counseled. All information remains confidential.
Specialists in infectious diseases who have many years of HIV-treatment experience provide comprehensive management of patients with HIV infection or AIDS. Services include treatment with all available antiviral medications, treatment of HIV-related infections, and management of complicated medical conditions (including HIV and Hepatitis C co-infection).
Physicians in the Infectious Disease Consultation program see any patient referred with a diagnostic or therapeutic problem thought to be infectious in origin, such as occult fevers, osteomyelitis, respiratory infections, severe cellulitis, mononucleosis syndromes, chronic viral infections including hepatitis B and hepatitis C, intestinal infections, pneumonia, tropical infections, infections associated with animal and insect exposure, and HIV infections.
The staff has particular expertise with unusual syndromes accompanied by fever that present diagnostic problems.
