Program Description:

The newly renovated Pediatric Intensive Care Unit provides a multidisciplinary forum for the care of critically ill and injured infants and children. State-of-the-art pediatric hemodynamic monitoring and pediatric bronchoscopy are available, as well as a full range of pediatric and surgical subspecialties. In addition, 24-hour-a-day in-hospital attending coverage by anesthesiologists is available to assist in emergency airway control for children.

The care of all patients admitted to the PICU is personally coordinated by physicians with special training in pediatric critical care. Such a system facilitates communication with the child's primary care physician and results in better coordination of care.

A critical care transport team staffed by senior-level pediatric residents (PL3 or greater), pediatric critical care nurses and respiratory therapists is available to provide transport of patients to the PICU. In addition, helicopter transport is available for patients deemed too unstable to be transported by ground.

  • Helicopter transport for critically ill children
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) courses available to the community
  • Intensive care and monitoring for critically ill and unstable infants and children to age 18
