Program Description

The gastroenterologists in the Biliary and Pancreas Disease Center, in conjunction with our surgery, radiology, oncology, and pathology colleagues at the center, offer a multi-disciplinary approach to patients with gallstone disease as well as malignancies of the pancreas and biliary system. Our gastroenterologists utilize state-of-the-art endoscopic technology, including endoscopic ultrasound, in diagnosing and treating the complications of gallstone disease as well as malignancies of the pancreas and biliary system.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a state-of-the-art technology that combines endoscopy and ultrasound to obtain images of the internal organs in the chest and abdomen and enables the visualization of all layers of the intestinal tract. EUS plays an integral role in determining the stage of gastrointestinal and lung cancers, and in detecting bile duct stones. Combined with fine-needle aspiration, EUS is a minimally invasive alternative to exploratory surgery to obtain tissue samples from abdominal and chest organs such as the pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder, liver, spleen, and chest and abdominal lymph nodes. Our physicians also utilize EUS to guide pancreatic pseudocyst drainage and provide celiac plexus block for abdominal pain related to chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer.
